Slow Rise Music: still there in your body by Kitty Xiao
Kitty Xiao (composer) and Jessica Hiemstra's (poet) still there in your body was commissioned for Slow Rise Music's production Fair Use, a programme of new vocal works for SATB vocal quartet and vocal soloists themed around the legal doctrine of the same name. Still there in your body more specifically draws textual inspiration from the work of Audre Lorde and musically explores ideas of transformation and deconstruction in art. Fair Use was presented at Native Earth's Aki Studio on September 10, 2022 and made possible with the generous help of the Canada Council for the Arts, SOCAN Foundation, and private donors. The full text of poem below:
"you poured your love
wake them up laughing
mourn the dead so loud
until rain comes
that lover you miss
still there in your body
dust light catches
pleasure to be your compass
flickering in your body"
